Set in the bayous of southern Louisiana, Beasts of the Southern Wild is a gripping and poetic film, oscillating between reality and fantasy. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis), a fearless six-year-old girl, and her ailing father Wink (Dwight Henry) live in an impoverished community near the Delta, largely forgotten by the rest of the world. When their homes flood after a terrible storm, Hushpuppy and Wink gather the survivors of their community to rebuild over the waters. But as Wink's health deteriorates rapidly and the aurochs, prehistoric creatures, arrive, a tale of extraordinary resilience and of finding one’s place in a world that is both beautiful and brutal enfolds.
Beasts of the Southern Wild, the feature debut from director Benh Zeitlin, won the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including for Best Picture.
