Rootwork Cinema
Free the mind. Decolonize the lens.
Rootwork Cinema is a community film gathering and collective viewing practice. We come together around film, food, and conversation to question the stories we have been taught, and to make space for other ways of seeing, remembering, and imagining.
We understand cinema as a political and relational space. Through shared screenings and discussion, we work to dismantle colonialism, imperialism, and ongoing settler-colonial projects — not only as historical systems, but as structures that still shape everyday life.
Rootwork Cinema is a practice of watching back:
back to the land,
back to histories that were erased or distorted,
back to struggles that continue in the present.
Together we aim to:
• Unlearn colonial narratives
• Center Indigenous, Black, and Global South perspectives
• Interrogate empire, extraction, and systems of erasure
• Reconnect culture, land, and liberation
We believe film can be a space to sit with discomfort, to unlearn what power has normalized, and to imagine otherwise — collectively.
All our events are donation-based. Part of the contributions support the practical costs of organizing, and part goes in solidarity to grassroots initiatives in places directly impacted by war, displacement, and colonial violence, such as Sudan and Gaza.
Rootwork Cinema is small, growing, and rooted in collective care, political education, and shared experience.
