That's right! International drama and dance theater, productions by major German-speaking theaters, literature, as well as outstanding productions by the New Circus and selected children's and youth theater productions form the core of the contemporary program.
Every day from May 1 to June 13, you will have the opportunity to discover a new exhibition, performance, theater, dance, concerts and much more from different angles to broaden your own perspective, because you are not just a passive spectator here. The festival is intended much more as an open meeting place where visitors and artists can enter into an exchange about pressing questions of the future.

Did you know that the Ruhr Festival is one of the oldest and largest theater festivals in Europe? In 1946, artists from Hamburg exchanged their performances for coal from the Ruhr region - art for coal, in the middle of the post-war period. One of Europe's most important theater festivals has grown from this strong gesture. And in 2026, it will continue to offer new perspectives, really good vibes and, above all, culture that has something to say!

The cabaret artist Teresa Reichl also awaits you. She talks about her life, her plans at 16 and what remains of them today at almost 30. A clever, honest program about literature, trends, society and politics.✨💐
IRGENDWO
The virtual reality installation "IRGENDWO" by Schippers&VanGucht is also celebrating its German premiere during the Ruhrfestspiele. With special glasses, you are immersed in another world. Into the world of thoughts of a lonely child.🚸The installation deals with closeness, distance and loneliness.💜
