The theater program: theater performances & premieres in Cologne
Cologne is a city that likes to talk, loudly, directly, with heart and soul, and that's exactly what makes it the perfect stage for great theater. Whether you prefer to sit in plush armchairs and follow the performances of a renowned ensemble or feel like you're in the middle of it all instead of just being there in a small basement stage, here you'll find both and much more in between. The theater landscape in Cologne is as diverse as the city itself, and anyone who thinks theater is dusty and not for the under-forties simply hasn't seen the right plays. Schauspiel Köln is the first port of call for anyone who wants to experience sophisticated city theater at the highest level. The ensemble is currently playing at the Depot in Mülheim because the historic Schauspielhaus on Offenbachplatz is being renovated and is due to reopen for the 2026/27 season, which is a good story in itself: a theater waiting for its own rebirth. At the Depot, you can expect contemporary productions, politically charged texts and an ensemble that really has something to say on stage. For those who like things a little smaller and freer, the Freie Werkstatt Theater, or FWT for short, has been a fixture of Cologne's independent scene since 1977. This is where in-house productions are created that deal with the burning issues of the present, documentary theater, new drama, performances that get under your skin and linger for days. Similarly fearless, but with a different energy, is the Theater der Keller, which is currently playing in the Werkshalle am Deutzer Hafen and sees itself as a home for socio-political, contemporary drama. In the Belgian Quarter is the Theater im Bauturm, an independent theater that has shown since the early 1980s that independent theater does not necessarily mean small ambitions. As a rule, different plays are shown here five evenings a week, the repertoire changes regularly and always has surprises in store. And then there is the Volksbühne am Rudolfplatz, which appeals to a wide audience with its Cologne folk theater charm and a well-mixed program of comedy, drama and contemporary stories. The Scala Theater, on the other hand, is what you might call a Cologne comedy theater: lots of warmth, humor and a program that shows that popular theater and quality are not mutually exclusive. In short, whether you're looking for classical drama, independent theater, political performance or light-hearted comedy, Cologne's calendar of events has something for every taste in theater and every mood. All you have to do is go out and reserve a seat, preferably before it's sold out.
