Lecture by Claudia Dreibrodt and Ernst Kujer
They did it! Our colleague Claudia Dreibrodt took on the toughest rowing race in the world - the World's Toughest Row. As the first German mixed-pairs team called Alpine Rowers, she and her partner Ernst Kujer rowed almost 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in a special ocean rowing boat; completely self-sufficient, unaccompanied and propelled only by their own muscle power.
Their rowing boat, which was almost 7.5 m long and 1.7 m wide, was their living space - they slept in two cabins; food, freeze-dried food, was prepared using a Primus stove; the sea water was made drinkable using a desalination plant; electricity was only available via solar panels and contact with land was only possible via a satellite telephone.
The racing fleet of 38 boats started on December 11, 2024 from La Gomera (Canary Islands) with the destination Antigua (Caribbean). The teams, ranging from solo rowers to a maximum 5-person team, took between 37 and 65 days to complete the crossing in waves up to 8m high.
Experience their exclusive presentation with previously unseen images and film material, in which the two talk about their preparations and experiences and what it means to take part in this very special expedition rowing race as a pair.
