A MIDSUMMER NIGHT´S DREAM (Ein Sommernachtstraum)

The opera A Midsummer Night's Dream is based on one of William Shakespeare's most famous comedies. Set in fabulous times, it tells of the quarrelling king and queen of the fairies, of love potions, theatrical craftsmen, young noblemen fleeing their parents' rules and of desire unleashed in the forest. In their adaptation, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears remained largely faithful to Shakespeare's 400-year-old material. Their opera was premiered in 1960 under Britten's baton. His colorful music creates its own worlds of sound in keeping with the convoluted storylines, which, with their respective instrumentation, transport the audience into the events of a wild summer night.
