Two queens, united in their heritage, divided by claims to power: after the Scottish Queen Mary Stuart is accused of murdering her husband by her people, she flees to Protestant England, partly because her Catholicism leads her to believe that she is the rightful heir to the English crown. She is arrested by Elizabeth I, Queen of England, and is imprisoned for 19 years until her trial. While Mary's fate lies in the hands of her rival, a profound conflict over the price of the crown unfolds. In his historical drama, Friedrich Schiller shows us the human tragedy behind the power games and raises the question of personal and political responsibility.
