Sprockets, balance, airstream and fun: Ondřej Buddeus and illustrator Jindřich Janíček explain everything children need to know about cycling in a great non-fiction book. This ranges from the components and different types of bikes (and types of cyclists!) to sports in which bikes are used - even off-the-beaten-track races such as the World Mountain Bike Snorkeling Championships are included. Buddeus and Janíček do not ignore the dangers, pain and frustrations - but from the very first page they contrast them with the greatest benefit that cycling has to offer: Freedom.

Beautiful fast bikes: We are expecting Leipzig bike enthusiasts Alexander Pfeifer, firefighter and recreational pedal knight, and Martin Götze, four-time GDR road racing champion and owner of a bike store in Leipzig-Thekla, as guests with some of their most beautiful speedsters to touch and marvel at.

Ondřej Buddeus comes from Prague and is a writer, translator and editor who studied Nordic Studies and Translation Studies (German). He writes texts for children, prose and poetry. His awards include the Czech Jiří Orten Prize for authors under the age of thirty and the Magnesia Litera. "Fahr Rad!", illustrated by Jindřich Janíček, has been nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize 2025 and Science Book of the Year 2025.

Martin Goetze, born in Leipzig in 1957, turned to cycling after athletics in 1973 and was GDR road race champion four times between 1979 and 1988. In 1990, he was the last cyclist from the GDR to win a stage of the International Peace Ride. Today, Martin Goetze runs a bike store in Leipzig and is one of the organizers of the Ostseetour, a 24-hour tour for everyone from Leipzig to the Baltic Sea.

Alexander Pfeiffer, born in 1973, has always been interested in moving and moving things. The simple yet ingenious means of transportation by bicycle is a late passion, with a particular focus on steel racing bikes from the 1970s to 1990s. Pfeiffer lives as a fireman in Leipzig.
