Film in Leipzig

Whether art house, blockbusters or documentaries: What's playing at the cinema today? We love international and German films, have a big heart for art house cinema and recommend classic films and original versions (the "OmU" and "OV" in the cinema program). Grab some popcorn, nachos and get ready for the big or small screen.

Movies, cinema, blockbusters & sneak peeks in Leipzig

Leipzig is a city that loves stories, and you can see that not only in the bookshops and reading stages, but also on the big screen. If you go to the cinema here, you rarely end up in a faceless multiplex, but rather in a cinema with character, a program and perhaps a beer in your hand. The city's film scene is as diverse as its neighborhoods, and that's a real compliment. At the heart of Leipzig's cinema culture are the Passage cinemas in the city center: a classic arthouse cinema with a selection of arthouse films, original versions, sneak previews and regular themed series that has been proving for decades that good cinema doesn't need a huge screen, but above all good taste. Those who prefer to watch films in the Westend will find a very special atmosphere at the Luru Kino in the Spinnerei: the cinema is located in the middle of the creative quarter of the old cotton mill, surrounded by studios and galleries, and shows a curatorially thought-out program with independent films, documentaries and occasional director talks. For those who like it even smaller and more personal, we recommend the Cineding in Plagwitz: small auditorium, large selection of films, bar open during the screening, and an atmosphere that feels more like an evening with friends than a visit to the cinema in the classic sense. The Schauburg rounds off the range of arthouse cinemas and also shows a selected film program far removed from the big blockbusters. Anyone who wants to experience cinema as a festival should mark DOK Leipzig in their calendar: The international festival for documentary and animated film is one of the most important of its kind in Europe and takes place at numerous venues across the city every fall. And when the warm season arrives, the film enjoyment moves outside: summer cinema in the Moritzbastei, open-air screenings in the Spinnerei and other open-air cinemas turn the cinema evening into an open-air event with real flair. Leipzig shows that film does not have to be a passive experience, but an active decision for a certain evening, a certain cinema, a certain atmosphere. Browse through our calendar of events, see what's on and treat yourself to a movie night that's more than just sitting in the dark for two hours.
