Alela Diane has been one of the most distinctive voices in American indie folk for over two decades. She grew up in a musical environment and found her way to the guitar and songwriting at an early age. She gained international attention in the mid-2000s with the album The Pirate's Gospel, whose pared-down arrangements and haunting imagery quickly made her a fixture of a new folk generation.
Diane's music thrives on restraint and precision: a clear, undisguised voice, acoustic instrumentation and lyrics that combine personal experiences with universal motifs. Nature, transience, relationships and inner processes of change run like a red thread through her work. Critics have described her songs as "quiet, but with a lasting effect", while Paste Magazine describes her songs as "immaculately beautiful indie folk songs".
Today Alela Diane lives in Portland, Oregon. Her songs continue to move beyond fashionable trends - introspective and carried by poetic clarity and a quiet determination. Her new, sixth studio album "Looking Glass" was produced by Tucker Martine (Neko Case, My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists) and was created with the help of Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket), Scott Avett (The Avett Brothers) and Ryan Francesconi (Joanna Newsom), among others. It is not for nothing that Rolling Stone calls it a "sentimental masterpiece". Bedroomdisco has recognized "moments from her life", "turning them into songs we can all identify with".
Alela Diane stands for a folk that is not nostalgically backward-looking, but speaks from the present - a timeless, grandiose music that does not impose itself, but creates space. She has this uncanny ability to completely detach herself and her music from any musical and historical context.
"Alela Diane's uncanny ability to completely detach herself and her music from any musical or historical context has earned her a sizable following in the New Weird America folk movement.... Her sound is timeless, that of a wandering troubadour that comes along only a few times per generation."
"insanely beautiful, with the strength and delicacy of spider silk" (UNCUT)
