ALIENATION III

In the organizer's words:

🎭🌍 An event organized by euro-scene Leipzig.

ALIENATION III - Robert Ssempijja (Kampala)

Ernst May was one of the German star architects of the 20th century. Among others, he created the urban planning program "Neues Frankfurt", Neu-Altona in Hamburg, Neue Vahr in Bremen as well as housing projects in the Soviet Union and Kampala, Uganda. From a European perspective, he wanted to create social architecture based on the garden city model - all areas of life in one unit.

Robert Ssempijja grew up there. In ALIENATION III, the choreographer, who lives between Europe and Africa, dances the attitude to life of an urbanistically colonized population. Even today, May's ring-shaped Kampala looks like a fortress and a foreign body: locals turn around outside the gates while the colonial rulers walk around inside.

Ssempijja, who was awarded a Pina Bausch scholarship, reflects on the decolonization of his city. On stage, he puts up street signs, links the performance with the film ALIENATION I and lets the red earth of the region become visible from his hair - floury dust as the only home?
