He is regarded as the pop star of the organ, dazzling, extravagant, brilliant and enormously versatile: American organ virtuoso Cameron Carpenter is one of the top stars of the international soloist jet set, taking the organ out of the church and into the concert hall - and has shown over the past few years of his global career that the "queen of instruments" also has a completely different side. Carpenter, who trained at the renowned Juilliard School in New York and was the first organist ever to be nominated for a GRAMMY Award, plays the complete "classical" organ repertoire with aplomb, but also sweeps the audience off their feet with pop music arrangements and his own compositions. Organ at its best - and yet so very different, new and irresistible. The arrangement of Sergei Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a theme by the devil's violinist Niccolò Paganini gives nothing to the soloist. In Camille Saint-Saëns' Organ Symphony, the sound of more than 5,000 pipes (the Cologne Philharmonie organ is so monumentally equipped!) merges with that of the orchestra to create a triumphant apotheosis. The composer wrote about his work: "Here I have given everything I could give ... I will never write anything like it again." Just the right piece for an exceptional artist like Cameron Carpenter.
