An infinite cosmos of colors and sounds, deep darkness and dazzling light, untamed, mysterious landscape, the largest forest area on earth: the wilderness of the Amazon jungle in South America is of overwhelming beauty and biodiversity. Inspired by the shimmering nature of the jungle with all its fascinating facets, the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos created a powerful symphonic cantata. Conductor Simone Menezes has extracted a suite from this masterpiece by her compatriot, which gains enormous intensity in the performance by the Gürzenich Orchestra through images by Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. The impressive photos document not only the fascination of flora and fauna in the Amazon, but also the dramatic effects of the destruction of biodiversity through human influence. The Gürzenich Orchestra not only wants to create unique musical experiences. It also sees it as its responsibility to address important social issues and bring them together in an artistic dialog.
