A cone of light in the darkness: Greta Garbo and Erika Mann meet in the mountains - between memory, film and fiction. In her new novel, Angela Steidele transforms history into cinema, politics into emotion, and makes the 20th century shimmer.

Ins Dunkel - as the title suggests - is a rousing mixture of screwball comedy, melodrama and cinematic romance. In clever flashbacks, it tells of Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Erika Mann - of love, power and the art of staging oneself while the world slips into darkness.

Careful research - literary writing is Angela Steideles trademark in her works. She received the Bavarian Book Prize for her novel Rosenstengel (2015). Enlightenment. Ein Roman was nominated for the 2023 Leipzig Book Fair Prize and was awarded the Klopstock Prize for New Literature. The author, born in 1968, lives in Cologne. In addition to her writing, she works as a journalist, in particular for Deutschlandfunk.
