AUA are back with their third studio album Painkiller No.1, marking the end of an impressive trilogy. After the introspective depth of The Damaged Organ (2022) and the explosive exuberance of their debut album I Don't Want It Darker (2020), the latest work by multi-instrumentalists Fabian Bremer and Henrik Eichmann is a testament to their artistic dynamism and long-standing friendship. Once again recorded independently between home studios and a remote vacation cabin, Painkiller No.1 is a carefully composed mosaic of sonic complexity and complex songwriting that illustrates the duo's relentless drive for further development. Motorik beats and synth arpeggios remain the driving forces in AUA's creative output, as in the track Disconnected Bliss or the album's title track.
However, Bremer and Eichmann also allow themselves room to breathe, especially as more songs are carried by their vocal performances, as in Scenes of Quiet Life or White Sharks. On Painkiller No.1, the two musicians expand their sonic palette of fragile vocals, dry-punchy drums, vintage synths and lo-fi guitars with further influences that push the boundaries of their established sound: Inspired by the psychedelic outbursts of Portishead and The Beatles, via the intricate arrangements of Autolux and Broadcast, the band's third long-player ventures into uncharted territory, but remains true to the raw, churning aesthetic of its predecessors. Each track becomes a journey in itself, demonstrating the maturity of the two musicians as songwriters and storytellers.

Wohnbau
Wohnbau actually make music. Initially founded as a studio project during the pandemic in order to be musically active despite the restrictions, the quartet is now on stage to present the songs from their first release and more live. They pursue an open musical approach that combines and reinterprets elements of post-punk, krautrock, new wave and minimal music in the Uncanny Valley of their own (anti-)style. Not as a recombination, but as an approach.
