Exhibition opening:
by photojournalist and filmmaker Mirco Keilberth
More than ten years after the peak of the refugee movement in 2015, when more than one million Syrians and other civil war refugees came to Germany, the mood in Europe has changed. Agreements with countries in the western and southern Mediterranean are intended to prevent migrants and refugees from reaching Italy, Greece or Spain. Although the number of arrivals has fallen significantly, the causes of migration continue to exist. War, climate change, nepotism, unemployment and the creeping denationalization of entire regions continue to drive many young people to leave their homes. Families are forced to sell everything they own in order to give their relatives the chance of a better life.
The exhibition "Beyond the Mediterranean" sheds light on current escape routes, the economic situation in the countries of origin and the EU's strategies in the southern and western Mediterranean. With impressive photographs, videos, figures and interviews with experts, it provides insights into the realities of life for migrants and refugees: from the tent cities in Tunisia to everyday life in Damascus and Tripoli to the smuggling routes through the Sahara. The reports and images on display portray people from Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan and West Africa who have left, had to flee or have returned voluntarily. The exhibition addresses questions that often remain unanswered in daily reporting and makes it clear that migration - even if it no longer dominates the headlines on a daily basis - will remain one of the major global challenges of the coming years.
The exhibition was conceived by Mirco Keilberth. He is an independent journalist, filmmaker and media trainer specializing in North Africa and Southeast Europe. Born in Hamburg, he studied media and cultural studies and began his journalistic career reporting on the war in the former Yugoslavia. He then worked for several years in Belgrade and Sarajevo before producing documentaries and reports on conflicts in Africa. He has traveled to more than 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Migration is a central theme of his work. He regularly gives lectures and organizes photo exhibitions with impressions along the migration routes in Africa and Europe.
Mirco Keilberth is available for talks in schools, ministries and interested groups during the exhibition period. Dates by arrangement: " schlenker@g-h-h.de
