The young farmer Balla Diarra works as a porter in Bamako. He meets Balla Traoré, a young engineer who has returned from Europe, takes him under his wing and employs him in his factory. Driven by the liberal ideas he gained during his studies in Europe, Balla Traoré wants to improve the working conditions in the factory. In this feature film, director Souleymane Cissé depicts the political and economic tensions in Malian society in the 1970s, which was characterized by the emergence of a working class and the excesses of a corrupt political system. BAARA, the first feature film produced in Mali, won the Étalon de Yennenga at FESPACO in 1979.
