Everyone wants justice - always for themselves, sometimes for others, rarely for everyone. But what is justice and how can it be achieved? Bernhard Schlink offers neither an ideal concept nor a simple formula. His concern is more modest. He shows how we have to keep searching for fair solutions and how we can find them. This is work, the text is a guide to the work of justice.

Bernhard Schlink, 1944, lawyer, lives in Berlin and New York. His first novel 'Selbs Justiz' was published in 1987; his 1995 novel 'Der Vorleser', translated into over 50 languages, awarded national and international prizes and filmed in 2009 by Stephen Daldry with Kate Winslet under the title 'The Reader', made him famous worldwide. His most recent novel was 'The Late Life' (2023).
