Multi-sensory infrasound and music experience
In Beyond Silence, South African composer Franco Schoeman combines infrasound with images and music to create a live audiovisual experience based on sound waves.
Elephants use infrasound to communicate over long distances. The acoustic vibrations of infrasound are below 20 Hertz. For humans, the frequencies can only be felt but not heard. This is why he also enables hearing-impaired people to take part in the performance.
In addition to his artistic work, Schoeman is also committed to helping elephants. This includes the application of infrasound technology in practice, including conceptual infrasound "elephant gates" that allow elephants to safely migrate along certain corridors in Africa.
At the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia in Italy, Franco Schoeman, together with ASCENDO Immersive Audio and Marc Sherratt, Sustainability Architects (MSSA), presented the elephant gate project in an exhibition entitled "Talking to Elephants".
