Reading and discussion: Patrick Findeis and Richard Stoiber
On November 18, 2025, the tenth anniversary of the author's death, Dieter Bongartz's last novel Vaterland will be published. We are taking this as an opportunity to celebrate the literary legacy of this versatile writer, screenwriter and filmmaker. Author Patrick Findeis and publisher Richard Stoiber will read from the novel and guide us through the stories interwoven in it.
After being diagnosed with cancer, the narrator embarks on a journey through time and space, tracing his family history - from the alleyways of Quedlinburg in the Weimar Republic to the Lower Rhine, where his father was infected by the Nazi virus at an early age. Bongartz links personal fates with the German history of the 20th century and shows how violence and totalitarianism shape generations. In poetic language, a polyphonic panorama of hope, loss and memory emerges.
With this book premiere, we commemorate an author whose work captivates through empathy, linguistic originality and a precise view - and whose voice still resonates today.
