Carolin Amlinger - Zerstörungslust

Before his re-election, Donald Trump promised to unhinge liberal democracy. He was elected not despite this promise, but because of it. In their last bestseller "Gekränkte Freiheit" (Offended Freedom), Carolin Amlinger and Oliver Nachtwey showed how libertarianism and authoritarianism could merge. In their new book "Zerstörungslust" (Destruction Lust), they both look at the voters and followers of Trump, Musk and the AfD. Where does this desire for destruction come from? And why do so many citizens follow the libertarian authoritarians into self-imposed fascism? Based on extensive empirical research and interviews, Amlinger and Nachtwey develop an explanation: at its core, this revolt is directed against the blockade of liberal societies that no longer fulfill their promises of advancement and emancipation. Carolin Amlinger, born in 1984, is a literary sociologist and research associate at the University of Basel; she will be a guest in Stuttgart.
