Cerys Hafana – Angel

An old man goes for a walk in the woods, hears a bird singing and accidentally disappears for 350 years... This is the simple, magical starting point, based on an old folk tale that Cerys Hafana (they/them) discovered in the depths of the Welsh National Library. From this, the young composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist created the opening track Helynt Ryfeddol for her third album Angel. This fascinating collection of songs and compositions intoxicates with its incredible intimacy and immediacy, combining minimalism and avant-garde with traditional folk as well as contemporary Breton folk styles. At the heart of these deeply rich, innovative and exciting pieces, alongside the piano, is the beguiling sound of the Welsh triple harp, whose spectrum Cerys makes unmistakable through her special playing style and preparation of the strings, for which she is celebrated as a great discovery not only in the British feuilletons and at intentional festivals. With Angel, Cerys connects and gives us a profound sonic experience of natural spectacle, mysticism and the cycle of life, celebrating the fantastic qualities of music and timelessness by creating a stunning moment from musical tradition and the very present.
