Plays, operas and premieres: Hanover's stages are waiting for you!
Hanover and theater is a combination that has more substance than the city sometimes gets credit for. Lower Saxony's capital is not necessarily the first name that springs to mind when you think of vibrant cultural life. But anyone who believes this has not yet experienced Schauspiel Hannover. The Staatsschauspiel Hannover has five stages in the city and shows that serious theater life has nothing to do with boredom. The Schauspielhaus in Prinzenstraße is the big flagship, a place where ambitious drama with a real ensemble awaits you, with plays that range from drama classics to contemporary premieres and treat the stage for what it is: a place where the world looks different from outside. If you prefer a more intimate setting and don't want to disappear into a large hall, Ballhof Eins is the place for you. The historic building in the heart of Hanover's old town, which was built between 1649 and 1664 and was originally intended for courtly badminton, is now one of the most charming venues imaginable for an evening of theater. Here, the young division of Schauspiel Hannover presents classics in a new form and new plays by young authors, and the foyer invites you to linger before and after the performances, which makes theater what it should be: a sociable experience. Right next door is Ballhof Zwei, another venue of the Staatstheater, which is also used by the Junges Schauspiel and where the audience sometimes even shares the stage with the actors, making theater texts physically tangible in a completely different way. For all those who want to broaden their theater curiosity, Hanover also has an independent scene to be proud of: A total of 15 ensembles make up the city's independent theater landscape and ensure that smaller, bolder and sometimes wilder formats find their place alongside the big houses. TAK, the city's cabaret stage, brings political cabaret, satire and comedy to the stage and is therefore the place for anyone who likes to combine their theater evenings with a good laugh and even better reflection. And then there is the Gartentheater in the Herrenhausen Gardens, which offers a truly special atmosphere as an open-air venue, because when do you ever have the opportunity to experience stage art in a baroque garden? Hanover proves with all this that you don't need a metropolis to have a vibrant theater world. All you need is the willingness to be surprised. And you should bring that with you! <3
