Choreografien für XR

Immersive choreographies: dance in VR, AR, XR

Fountains (Fragments)
Video, 15'
Fountains (Documents)
video installation
Germany, Finland 2025
Artistic direction: deufert&plischke

The international artist duo deufert&plischke present multimedia works in two different formats from their project Fountains - Body Fluids after Marcel Duchamp, for which performers aged between nine and 87 embarked on a choreographic search for the taboos of leaking bodies in the summer of 2024 and together collected stories that transcend borders.

The starting point for Fountains was an interest in the body as a source, a fluid cycle and an outlet zone. The artists are not interested in breaking taboos, but rather in exploring memories and stories in which bodies in a fluid state are confronted with helplessness, defiance, shame or lust. Kattrin Deufert and Thomas Plischke have developed texts, dances, masks and costumes in open, intergenerational workshops with interested parties and in cooperation with the artist Dessa Ganda, which deal with the topic in a very personal way. Photo and video works were created during several months of filming in an empty swimming pool in Schwelm and the lake landscape in Oravikoski, Finland.

D.I - In the Head
Mixed Reality
Germany 2024
Concept: Hojin Lee

D.I - In the Head is part of the XR installation series Dissociative Identity (D.I), which deals with the experience of dissociative identity and early childhood trauma. The work offers a sensory, immersive journey into a fragmented inner world where multiple selves and emotional states coexist. With the help of augmented reality, invisible psychological landscapes become spatially tangible. The installation blurs the boundaries between real and virtual and invites reflection on the instability of memory, the complexity of identity and the multi-layered architecture of the self.

[ e s c ] Ongoing Realities (OR)
Augmented Reality
Sweden 2023, 7'
Concept: Anna Näsström, Johan Bandholtz

[ e s c ] explores escapism as a concept and state of mind. Inspired by the logic of algorithms and social media, a choreographic research was created that deals with digital escape mechanisms. The work consists of five modules and takes a critical look at the interactions between virtual realities and human behavior. The audience interacts with the artworks using their smartphones and the Artivive app.

Oneironautika II
Mixed Reality

Germany 2024
Concept & development: Laurenz Ulrich × MIREVI
Choreography: Charlotte Triebus

The immersive 3D installation takes visitors on a digital trip into mysteriously dissolving spaces whose model is a theater hall. Like in a lucid dream, you move through a point cloud of the building, encounter ghostly figures on the stage, hear voices from past performances and become aware of the fleeting nature of sensory experiences. The dance piece developed for the work deals with logic and control, with distorted and distorting lucid dreams and toxic-transformative dependencies. The background narrative shows excerpts from the play "Vom Licht" by Anselm Neft.

The Reverse Turing Test
Mixed Reality
Germany 2025
Concept & development: Tore Knabe

Are you able to fool the AI? How easy or difficult is it for us humans today to keep up with the capabilities of modern AIs when it comes to spontaneously giving a short answer in the role of a well-known historical figure? The Reverse Turing Experiment gives you the opportunity to test yourself, compare yourself with other players in a skill, and get a feel for how close AIs have come to us today and where they may even have moved on.

The Reverse Turing Test is an interactive virtual reality installation that explores the boundaries between artificial and human intelligence and raises fundamental questions about human nature and reality in an increasingly digitized world. At a time when AI systems and virtual humans are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the installation challenges participants to question their notions of authenticity, identity and human behavior.

Wave
Virtual Reality
Netherlands 2024
Director: Bart Hess
Choreography: Sedrig Verwoert

Wave is a psychedelic, immersive dance film in which the dancer's body is manipulated by repeating, delaying and shifting image sequences. The result is a choreography in which the history of each movement forms a new, organic structure. A group choreography, danced solo - every movement changes the overall silhouette. With the help of 360° 3D and VR, the film becomes an experience in which the audience not only watches, but can also control time and perspective. Digital manipulations create additional emotional dimensions - from claustrophobia to euphoria.

See Through
Mixed Reality
Israel 2024, 15'
Director & Choreography: Ofra Idel

See Through is an innovative dance and sound creation that transports the audience into a timeless, alien space where two characters plan their next move. Trapped on a distant star, they move in an endless loop of familiar patterns that reflect power and subjugation. Dynamics alternate between dominance and vulnerability - until one character breaks the cycle and crosses the boundary between virtual and real. As the tension escalates, a weapon comes into play - and everything takes an unpredictable turn.

LIVINGDEAD
Virtual Reality
Mexico 2024, 5'
Director: Uriel Bernal Aldaco
Choreography: Jose Erick Rosales Barragán

LIVINGDEAD is a physical dialog that explores the profound effects of work-related exhaustion on daily life. Through intense choreographic movements and powerful imagery, the piece shows the endless cycle of physical and emotional exhaustion we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Brended
Virtual Reality

Slovenia 2025
Director & concept: Iztok Kovač
Development, dance: EN-KNAP

The VR film Brended was created as part of the Stage 360 project and takes up the stage performance Superfluous by the EN-KNAP Group, which in turn is inspired by the essay "The Superfluous Man" by Ilija Trojanow. A text about the destructive power of capitalism, which systematically abandons people in the name of profit.

Shattered Echoes
Virtual Reality
Germany 2025
Director: Jérôme Lozano
Dance: Naz Salmanoglu
Production: Jérôme Lozano & Björn Sondermann in collaboration with Hugh Hou and Keeley Turner

Shattered Echoes combines contemporary dance with innovative visual effects. A dancer, surrounded by mirrors, explores dioptres, prisms and kaleidoscopic distortions in 180° VR. The story follows a young woman who confronts the fractured versions of herself. Through movement, she symbolically fights against broken or imperfect parts of her identity. A poetic work about transformation, resilience and inner clarity.

Whisper Down the Code
AI
Germany 2025
Created by: Kritika Singh Bisen, Plamena Dimitrova, Thanussayan Karunakaran (MA Digital Narratives, ifs Cologne).

An experimental project that explores dance as language - and invites AI into the dialog. With the help of motion tracking, movements of the body are captured and translated into music by AI. Others in turn interpret this music through dance, creating a continuous cycle. The project explores how emotion and meaning are co-created between bodies, technologies and art forms.

In this interactive installation, visitors can choose a track generated from a dancer's movements and respond with their own dance. They receive a personal piece of music from their movements - to download and share.
