DANCER OF THE YEAR - Trajal Harrell (Zurich / New York)

The award came as a complete surprise to him and triggered profound reflections on his role as an artist: A major German dance magazine bestowed the label "Dancer of the Year" on Trajal Harrell. The award was at once an incentive, a riddle and a challenge. The highly sensitive American always shows what he feels and how he thinks on stage, without considering himself a dance genius. He sees his role primarily as dissolving categories and classifications. The dance worlds he has explored include the popular American "hoochie-coochie" shows as well as Butoh dance from Japan, New York postmodernism and, above all, the underground voguing scene that is so closely associated with fashion. But Harrell never adopts the movement patterns of a community in his pieces. "When I go to the dance studio, I'm free and looking for something new," he explains. And he does away with any hierarchy between everyday gestures and academic vocabulary. With rebellious gentleness, Harrell doubts all recognition that comes from outside. For what are their criteria, which ultimately transfer social fragmentation into the world of dance?
