A play about love, vulnerability and the courage to remain true to oneself. At the center are Noah and Felix, two young men who fall in love with each other and whose relationship is accompanied by fractures, doubts and external and internal struggles from the very beginning. While Noah struggles with rejection and old hurts, Felix carries the burden of his own fears and experiences, which repeatedly set him back. Together with Bea, Felix's closest friend, they form a small web of love, friendship and loyalty - and at the same time of conflicts, secrets and unspoken expectations...
The play makes it clear how closely personal experiences are interwoven with social conditions. It not only tells of two people who want to give each other support, but also of structures that take this support away from them: (familial) rejection, the pressure of expectations from family and society, the destructive silence in relationships and the discrimination against queer people that is still present. The play thus addresses topics that are often taboo: the psychological (over)stress of young generations, the high suicide rate in the queer community and the lack of systemic (therapeutic) support measures.
But for all its gravity, the play does not lose itself in darkness. Tender, funny and hopeful moments arise in the midst of the uncertainties: an evening together with an unsuccessful meal, intimate conversations between friends, the tentative unfolding of a love that wants to be greater than the doubts. It is precisely in these moments that it becomes clear how important closeness and mutual support are in order to counteract the inner shadows.
"May I love" is therefore more than just a love story. It is a play about the search for identity, the need for recognition and the courage to be vulnerable. It shows that love is not only a private, but also a deeply political experience - especially when it is still not accepted by society as a matter of course. In the end, the big question remains, which goes far beyond the characters and affects every member of the audience: Am I allowed to love - and am I really allowed to live as I am?
Content warning: The play contains explicit depictions of violence and addresses sexualized violence, experiences of discrimination and oppression as well as fantasies of suicide.
