GDR 1965, feature film, 113 min,
Director: Kurt Maetzig
with: Angelika Waller, Alfred Müller
Language: OmeU (German with English subtitles)
Content Notes: 1
Maria Morzeck is 19 years old and works as a waitress. She actually wanted to go to university, but because her brother was sentenced to three years in prison for "inciting hatred against the state", her place at university is withdrawn. Maria then plunges into an affair with a much older and married man. One day, however, she learns that he is the judge who sentenced her brother to the severe punishment. Maria then looks for a way of her own to escape the state's tutelage.
At the notorious 'Kahlschlag' plenum in December 1965, leading SED functionaries railed against a supposedly 'decadent' development in GDR culture. Two films were shown to those present as particularly "bad examples" in order to make an example of them. Although the filmmakers were openly committed to socialism, the films were branded "anti-state" and - along with many other DEFA films - banned. They could only be shown publicly after 1990.
With introduction by film historian Dr. Andreas Kötzing.
