MOSAIK was much more than just a comic. For millions of readers in the GDR, it became an unofficial historical narrative. As an aquarium-colored trivial epic, the magazine shaped entire generations. But what ideas, role models and hidden references were behind the time-traveling adventures? In 60 pointedly narrated chapters, Thomas Kramer discovers a surprisingly wide network of historical, literary and artistic sources that the creators themselves never revealed. The result is a multifaceted panorama that sheds new light on the underestimated complexity of the cultural identity of the East. A somewhat different cultural history for all those who love the MOSAIK or are yet to discover it.

Dr. Thomas Kramer, habilitated at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2001 after completing his studies and doctorate. He lives and works as an exhibition curator and author in Berlin, where he taught at the Humboldt University.
