Das Schweigen brechen: Vergangenheitsaufarbeitung in Serbien

In the organizer's words:

What does it mean to grow up in a society in which war crimes are denied and perpetrators are celebrated as heroes?

Our long-standing partner Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) is addressing precisely this question in Serbia. With educational work, dialogue events and political engagement, YIHR is working against the glorification of the wars of the 1990s.

On this evening, we will talk about their work, discuss the importance of a culture of remembrance and historical responsibility and ask how young people can help shape the path to a more democratic society. We will also take a look at the current situation: for months, students in particular have been protesting against corruption and demanding fundamental reforms. At the same time, pressure is growing on civil society organizations such as YIHR from President Vučić's increasingly authoritarian environment. This makes their work for dialog, responsibility and human rights all the more important.
