THE HEART EATER

Election campaign. Local politics. Shopping paradise. All built on the same swamp. A woman's body turns up in the freshly concreted over bog: without a heart. Shortly afterwards, another one. Rather inconvenient when the mayor is just about to open his glittering shopping center. Crisis strategy: dispose of it, smile, cut the ribbon. But the bog seeps through the asphalt from below, the temple of consumption cracks - and the longing for love along with it.

Ferdinand Schmalz mixes crime thriller, political satire and Styrian legend to create an eerily beautiful linguistic frenzy. Between foot care, bone-cracking, undercover investigations and all kinds of confusion, "der herzerlfresser" tells of the love that is so hard to find, of the loneliness of death, and of the great uncertainty in between. Blackly humorous, bizarre and surprisingly tender.
