In his atmospheric, poetic ballet, which he created in 1971 during his time as ballet director in Frankfurt, John Neumeier tells E.T.A. Hoffmann's fairy tale of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King in a slightly different way. Marie is still a child, but she is already on the verge of growing up. And so she begins to explore what possibilities life has in store for her. In the course of the play, Marie comes to the realization that everything is possible, at least in dreams, and that our dreams can also provide us with a great deal for our lives. Mr. Drosselmeier gives her the key to this intuition (or is it the great choreographer Marius Petipa? Who knows...). He takes Marie into a fascinating world in which she encounters the main characters of great ballets and succumbs to their charm and fascination - and all the audience members with her.
