Dido loves Aeneas and Aeneas loves Dido. It could be so simple and even more beautiful, but it is not: the union between the Carthaginian queen and the prince who has fled Troy is prevented by the enmity of their two kingdoms. Henry Purcell's description of a great, albeit unfulfilled, love is as haunting as it is timeless. Schönberg's "Erwartung" is also about love, loneliness and fragility. A woman wanders across "moonlit streets and fields" in search of her lover. What is delusion? What is reality? A piece that reveals a glimpse into the subconscious: unsparing, expressive and compelling. With music that shows, not least, how beautiful Schönberg can sound. Between baroque and late romantic modernism, two destinies between suffering and life, longing and searching are revealed.
