Bernd & Hilla Becher - History of a Method

Bernd and Hilla Becher are famous for their black and white photographs of winding towers, blast furnaces, water towers, silos and gas storage facilities - all buildings that often have to do with mining or the production of iron. To find these buildings and constructions, most of which no longer exist, they have been traveling in the Siegerland and Ruhr regions since the late 1950s - later even in Europe and the USA.

As photo detectives, you can find out what fascinated Bernd and Hilla Becher so much about these imposing and sometimes mysterious-looking buildings during your visit to the exhibition. Some are reminiscent of machines from a science fiction film - huge, alien, almost extraterrestrial. Together we imagine what might have happened around them in the past: Who worked there? What did it sound like, smell like, feel like?

And anyway - why do you need a winding tower? What happens in a blast furnace? And why did the Bechers photograph all these buildings in the same light and preferably without people? You will discover all this - and perhaps a few new secrets - in this exciting exhibition.

So open your camera eyes - and off you go in search of clues!
