What is true? Between facts, interpretive sovereignty and responsibility

How do our language and certain concepts influence the way we meet and discuss? Where do disinformation and strategic narratives lead a society that is already threatened by division? What challenges do not only the media face at a time when the media public sphere is undergoing major changes?

The German-American political scientist Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook, President of PEN Germany and writer Matthias Politycki and Jens-Christian Rabe, features editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, will discuss facts and opinions, the loss of credibility, the freedom of the word and how we as a society can work together to counter the threats to democracy and freedom of expression. The panel discussion will be moderated by Anna Clauß, Head of Opinion and Debate, Der Spiegel.

The event will take place as part of Freedom of Expression Week from May 3 to 10, 2026. Initiated by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, the motto of this year's campaign week is "What is true?".
