From street singer to international star: at first, fate did not seem to mean well for Édith Giovanna Gassion, who grew up in the poorest of circumstances, threatened by hunger, violence and her father's alcoholism. At the age of 15, she left him to go to Paris with a friend to sing on the streets. She was soon discovered and performances in cabarets followed. Her short stature - 1.47 meters - earned her the nickname "la môme piaf", the sparrow girl. Recordings followed, and in the late 1930s she finally made her big breakthrough.
