Elling

For Elling and his friend Kai Uwe, the everyday problems they are confronted with after being released from a psychiatric hospital are a real challenge. Elling, who describes himself as a mama's boy, tends to exaggerate in every way, is know-it-all, headstrong and very, very anxious. He even perceives a ringing telephone as a threat against which he has to defend himself. His bearish "blood brother" Kai Uwe pursues the two great interests of his life with stoic tenacity: eating and (finally!) having sex with a woman.

After initial disasters and a few emotional crises, the two neurotic heroes actually develop a taste for life "on the outside".
