Democracy is coming under increasing pressure in Germany and around the world. Sigrid Dettlof and L.-Christian Glockzin , together with Uwe Schwarz, who will also direct, have created an evening of theater that looks at the world's situation with political beauty and hopeful despair and aims to use the means of theater to encourage people to survive - with humor, good texts and music.
As in the 2002 production "Fahrt ohne Schlaf", they were inspired by Erika and Klaus Mann's Pfeffermühle and were once again overwhelmed by the frightening historical parallels between 1930 and the present day. Their conclusion: it's five to 33.

"Of everything I have ever done, I remember the Pfeffermühle most fondly," said Erika Mann in an interview in the early 1960s. The Pfeffermühle was a literary cabaret that she founded in order to take up the fight against National Socialism as an artist. "We try to say the difficult things that need to be said today in the light form we have chosen... and we would have every reason to be ashamed if we ever stopped." This is how she described her artistic aspirations and her personal attitude.
Erika Mann sang, wrote, acted, organized and inspired. She was supported in her enterprise above all by Therese Giehse and her brother Klaus. With the help of preserved pepper mill texts and Uwe Schwarz's own texts, we draw a picture of her artistic and political journey through the years 1932-1945 and thus try to counter our own helplessness in the face of current political developments with confidence and hope: Fatalism is not an option.

We imagine what Erika Mann would have said about the current political developments and take a stand for our part, because we also believe "that every artistic work must have an inner attitude and conviction, that it would be worthless to write a little song with nothing behind it, no opinion, no faith, no hope." (Erika Mann 1934)
