In an English seaside town in the 1980s, Hilary works in a magnificent movie palace. She opens the doors in the morning, looks after the guests and also the popcorn that sometimes gets stuck in the seats after the show. But while the projectors rattle out classic movies onto the screen, Hilary has to deal with real life.

In this drama, star director Sam Mendes celebrates his love of cinema. Beautifully illustrated in shots by award-winning cinematographer Richard Deakins (BLADE RUNNER 2049). At the same time, the social drama addresses issues such as inequality of opportunity, racism and experiences of violence, which we regularly deal with in the Cinémathèque program. A film about the beauty of cinema and the stories it can illuminate.
