Eröffnung HIER UND JETZT im Museum Ludwig De/Collecting Memories from Turtle Island

In the organizer's words:

Memories are fragile. They are collected, shared, superimposed or erased. The eleventh project in the exhibition series HERE AND NOW is dedicated to the processes of collective memory and includes indigenous positions from Turtle Island - today's USA.
present-day USA. With the most extensive Pop Art collection outside the USA, the Museum Ludwig is known for its connection to the United States - a country that will celebrate its 250th year of independence in 2026. The focus of this exhibition is therefore on two contemporary American artists: Marie Watt and Wendy Red Star.

Wendy Red Star's (1981) photographic self-portraits take up Western notions of indigeneity in a humorously satirical way and invite us to take a more nuanced look.

At the center is the group of works Thirteen Moons by artist Marie Watt, a member of the Seneca Nation: thirteen hanging sculptures made of countless tin bells that can be touched and make a noise when touched. They allude to the jingle dress dance of the Ojibwe, which originated around 1900 as a healing ritual and was long banned by the US authorities. For the
exhibition, Watt collaborated with the jingle dress dancer Acosia Red Elk. Watt's sculptures are juxtaposed with photochromes created around 1900 by the Detroit Publishing
Company from the collection of the Museum Ludwig.

Acosia Red Elk will be dancing at the opening.
