Lust and desire, grace and unrestraint, seduction and catastrophe: Anyone who approaches Lulu, who succumbs to the pull of her charisma, is doomed to die. She appears both innocent and dangerous, angel and monster in one. A woman, drawn in an almost agonizingly realistic way, but at the same time a projection surface for fantasies and the abysses of the subconscious. Lulu walks over dead bodies and becomes the undoing of all those who meet her. In the end, she herself falls to the bottom, works as a prostitute and serves the serial killer Jack the Ripper as her last customer ...
Lulu is Alban Berg's second opera. He began composing it in 1928, interrupted the work again and again - and was ultimately unable to complete the monumental project: death took the pen from his hand in 1935 and Lulu remained a fragment. The opera, based on texts by Frank Wedekind, is one of the most important music theater works of the 20th century and is the first to be based entirely on the twelve-tone technique. The strict formal construction serves the dramatic expression throughout and the extremely subtle, colourful characterization of each of the numerous stage figures: one of the secrets of the success of this masterpiece, which has shaped the music of the 20th century.
Sakari Oramo and an exquisite ensemble of soloists embark on a thrilling rollercoaster ride between beauty and feverish nightmare worlds.
