Filn + Diskussion "The Illusion of Abundance"

In Latin America, large-scale economic projects, such as mining projects to extract iron ore, cause massive environmental destruction and threaten the livelihoods of many people.
A particularly emblematic case in this context is the dam burst on 25.01.2019 in a mining complex owned by mining giant Vale S.A. in Brumadinho, Brazil, in which 272 people lost their lives.
Also responsible: the German TÜV SÜD, which had certified the stability of the dam just a few months earlier and against which a criminal complaint was filed with the Munich public prosecutor's office six years ago by victims' relatives, ECCHR and Misereor.

The film The Illusion of Abundance portrays the work of activist Carolina de Moura Campos for integral reparation, environmental protection and water conservation in Brumadinho, alongside two other experiences of resistance to large-scale projects in Latin America (Máxima Acuña from Peru and Berta Cáceres from Honduras).

The visit of Danilo Chammas and Pablo da Silva, who work together with Carolina at Misereor's partner organization Instituto Cordilheira and provide legal advice to those affected and family members of the 272 victims, provides an opportunity to show this valuable film again with a premiere at the Film Festival Cologne 2022 and to talk to them about current developments in Brumadinho, German co-responsibility and corporate due diligence.
