by and with Markus John
Director: Markus John
Foxi (59, cab driver):
"You should never underestimate yourself - you're nothing - that's a mistake!"
Jussuf (48, museum attendant):
"My mother is practically everything to me."
Edeltraud (74, board widow):
"I don't want to play a role or anything, either. It's simple: I'm me and that's enough."
No author has a say on this evening. All of the text material is based on interviews that Markus John conducted personally with people he selected at random and did not know beforehand. Authentic life stories emerge; people express themselves in a language that is otherwise rarely heard in the theater. It becomes clear how complex the lives of the individuals are: it's about positive genes, Picasso and pimping, the GDR, dementia and being gay, about integration and prison and cancer and Krupp, boxing shacks, illegitimate children, fights, Stalingrad, the provinces and openness.
It becomes clear how important it is to listen and what power the texts develop in the process. The evening deliberately dispenses with grand theatrical means and impresses with its reduction to the essentials, true to a quote from Jim Jarmusch: "I would rather make a movie about someone walking his dog than about the Emperor of China."
