The promise of globalization that goods and people can move freely has turned out to be an evil illusion. Borders pervade modern society. They divide states, genders and income classes. Overcoming them is a privilege that is strictly controlled by sorting machines. Most people are denied access to education, health, resources and political participation. Free trade liberates capital, not people.

Steffen Mau is one of the most influential sociologists in Germany. He examines the boundaries that determine life in the 21st century and how they define opportunities and identities. He analyzes the technology that metrically measures us, the ideologies to justify power. The historical wall of stone and barbed wire lives on in our minds, dividing East and West. And while we are "unequally united", Steffen Mau shows that we have to fight for the basis of democracy: For a free and just society.
