The music of the Mannheim trio Frigo with pianist and composer Justin (aka Jürgen) Zitt is characterized very precisely in an article by Norbert Krampf, which we quote slightly abridged:

"The contemporary jazz scene is not exactly poor in piano trios, yet there are always players who take new aspects from the seemingly familiar format and amaze with independent ideas. One of these artists is Justin Zitt, who presents a multifaceted and colorful debut with his Trio Frigo. As a pianist and composer, Zitt has his finger on the pulse of modern creative jazz, incorporates influences from new music and jazz with remarkable aplomb, creates wide arcs and never loses sight of his audience. His pieces shine with polyrhythmic structures and the multidimensionality of greatly expanded harmonies; despite all their detailed sophistication, they always seem alive and convey an intensity that is both intellectually and emotionally fueled.

The trio has been playing Zitt's compositions for around four years, including gigs throughout Germany from 2023. "Before we went into the studio in February 2024, we had already played almost all the pieces live. Some of them matured over several years and we worked on the details again and again," says Zitt. "This allowed us to work with variations in rhythm and harmony during the recordings." The results are consistently impressive, sometimes even fascinating, whether due to their very different meters including quintuplets, their changing moods, their play of colors and the band's overarching creative will.

It is clear that the music has a tremendous character. Zitt's rhythmic and melodic imagination, his stylistic will and the sound language created together with his fellow players make Frigo a surprising and impressive experience and make the trio's debut album stand out from the wide field of jazz piano."
