With "Am Grund", saxophonist and composer Gregor Schor presents a work that takes jazz seriously in both its freedom and its formal rigor. Gregor Schor writes for the ensemble with the openness of a sketcher. The pencil replaces the baton: the lines are clearly drawn, but they allow for correction, expansion and spontaneity. This results in pieces that are both precisely constructed and permeable to the handwriting of each individual. This band is not an orchestra that delivers dutifully. It is a toolbox in which everything lies between surgical precision and sledgehammer. "Am Grund" is a jazz album that goes deep, but not into the darkness, but to where composition and improvisation, individual and ensemble, freedom and form meet.
