The Leipzig-Thekla subcamp was established in March 1943. The prisoners, several thousand men from the Soviet Union, Poland, France and other countries, had to perform forced labor for Erla Maschinenwerke GmbH. The camp was dissolved in April 1945, leaving around 300 sick prisoners behind. The SS locked them in a barrack and set it on fire. More than 80 men lost their lives. A few hours later, US soldiers entered the camp and documented the crime. These documents were used as evidence in the Nuremberg trial against the main war criminals and became internationally known.
