Communication is a black box. You put something in at one end and something comes out at the other, and usually you don't have the faintest idea what happened in between. What translation work has been done. From one self-evident system to another, from one language to the next, from these to the other letters. Not to mention the religious-pop-educational-cultural references!
With "Halsweh und Heiterkeit", Lee Subi and Posenenske Jo put the crowbars to this black box, pry it open and let a flood of misunderstandings rain down on the stage.
Misunderstanding has a bad reputation. We know it as the source of dramatic conflicts of catastrophic proportions. But misunderstandings that are caught being misunderstandings are a great thing. They make us laugh and lead us down completely unexpected paths of thought to new shores of absurdity.
In "Halsweh und Heiterkeit", Lee Subi and Posenenske Jo want to cultivate their delight in misunderstanding for a transcontinental audience. Is it possible to develop a play that is funny for both a German and a Korean audience? I hope so! Will they understand the same thing? Probably not! Is that a bad thing? No! Should Jo learn Korean? But quickly!
