Nana grows up on the island of Fogo with her father's family. Her mother Nia leaves the archipelago shortly after her birth to be treated for a mysterious illness - and never returns. One day, Nana falls seriously ill and is sent to the foot of the volcano for care. There she discovers a world between dream and reality. HANAMI, a Japanese term for the celebration of cherry blossom in spring, follows Nana on her journey from birth to the age of 17, with the burden she has to bear. In her debut film, Denise Fernandes poetically reflects on the situation of Cape Verdeans who are torn between here and elsewhere, as well as the pain of exile and isolation on an island.
