Horst Antes is one of the pioneers of new figuration in Germany. His iconic "Kopffüßler", his consistent exploration of the figure in space and his house archetypes have made him internationally renowned since the 1960s.
The exhibition offers an overview of the artist's multifaceted oeuvre - from early painterly experiments to later groups of works. The focus is on the important collection that Wolf and Ursula Hermann bequeathed to the Sprengel Museum Hannover in 1988 and which has been continuously expanded with funds from the foundation. Today it is the most extensive Antes collection in public museums.
On display are paintings, prints and sculptures that make the quiet intensity, formal rigor and enduring topicality of Antes' visual language impressively tangible. On display are around 80 paintings from the early 1960s to the present day, arranged by Antes himself into an installative presentation.
The presentation is complemented by the monumental seven-part sculpture ensemble "Garden of Earthly Delights", created in 1967 as decoration for the Federal Garden Show in Karlsruhe and now in the Ludwig Forum Aachen.
"Horst Antes. A Collection" opens simultaneously with an installation by Kaloki Nyamai.
