In the Meantime: A Play Across two Continent

In the organizer's words:

By Amineh Arani
A semi-biographical, telematic theater performance in Farsi, English and German

A couple separated by political borders: He lives in Iran and is not allowed to leave the country. She lives in exile in Germany and cannot return. In In the Meantime: A Play Across Two Continents, the two artists overcome this enforced distance through the power of art.

A shared space between Tehran and Cologne is created on stage. While he plays live from Iran, she appears via video projection from Germany. The audience experiences an intimate duet between two people who remain connected despite thousands of kilometers - through language, movement, memory and shared imagination.

The stage becomes a place of resistance and closeness. Technology is not merely a makeshift solution here, but a consciously used aesthetic tool: projection, signal and screen reflect the reality of the couple's lives - love and care that can only be lived digitally.

The play poses questions that go far beyond the private story: How can closeness be created in times of separation? What role does art play when political boundaries seem insurmountable? How much of the future can be imagined in exile?

In the Meantime: A Play Across Two Continents links the personal with the political. It tells of migration, exile and freedom of expression - topics that are particularly urgent in the context of current global debates.

The project is made possible by a residency grant from the Fonds Darstellende Künste in cooperation with flausen+. The residency is supported by the Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media

Supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, NRW Landesbüro Freie Darstellende Künste, the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR) and the Department for Diversity of the City of Cologne.
